First Steps

Wow-Wee! I’m so proud! Lucy has been standing unassisted for some time but always drops to her hands and knees to move.

Last night, right before bedtime. She was standing by her crib with a cute little ball in her hand and a determined look on her face. I held out my hands to her and she took one wobbly step in my direction, really slow. And then came step 3, 4 and 5 in a dash before she plopped down on the floor with a big smile on her face. I couldn’t believe it!

I called my mom and she said to me, “You know what this means.” What? I asked her. “You’re going to have to buy her some shoes!”

Sign for Bird

Today Lucy gave the sign for bird! She was so proud of herself. And so was I!

We have 2 bird feeders outside our kitchen window so there’s usually a lot of bird action going on in the mornings. Today, Lucy pointed at the bird and then made the bird sign. I cheered, she giggled. Yaaaaah!

Signing with babies is so cool!

Diaper Rodeo – Poop and Run

Posted in messy messes tagged , at 3:52 pm by babygroove

I almost lost my wee mind yesterday. Lucy was so wound up and full of energy when I tried to change her morning diaper that I really couldn’t keep her still. She spun and flipped and, just as I got her diaper loose, she sped off, poop going everywhere. I felt like a rodeo cowgirl.

Luckily, I change her over an old swaddle blanket so I mostly averted that disaster. But by the time I was able to clean one mess, she made it to the other side of the room where she promptly peed on the carpet. And she continued to be grumpy all morning and most of the day.

But after getting her out of the house and making a trip to the ice cream store (for momma!) she settled down and slept though the night. When I changed her this morning, she was as calm and content as I have ever seen her.

When Baby Gets Bored

Posted in baby entertainment tagged , at 7:58 pm by babygroove

Yesterday it rained most of the day and my daughter was exhibiting signs of cabin fever. We didn’t want to drive all over looking for fancy entertainment so we packed her up and went to the mall. It wasn’t long before Lucy became fascinated with the water fountains shooting in the middle of the mall. We stopped and looked (of course Lucy wanted to swim) and were enjoying the fact that we had a little ‘down time’. That’s when we spotted another couple doing exactly the same thing.

It turns out that a simple trip to the mall is grand excitement for a 9 month old baby. She loved going in all the new stores and she really loved the change of scenery. It was an exciting afternoon for her and, besides the 5 minute drive to the mall, it was free.

Baby Sign Language

Posted in baby signs tagged , at 1:58 am by babygroove

We have been trying to teach Lucy how to sign for the past couple of months and she is starting to get some of the signs.  The signal for “more” is touching fingertips together.  Lucy didn’t exactly do this on her first few attempts.  She actually grabbed my husband’s hands and made him give the more signal.  Now, who’s in charge!?
