On top of saving money there's something wonderful about giving someone a gift you've made with your very own hands. I hadn't touched a sewing machine in 10 years either until I got pregnant with my son and went into nesting overdrive. Now I'm addicted to making gifts. If you're on the sock monkey track (I decorated the nursery with the sock monkey fabric range you mentioned) another fun gift is actually making sock monkeys. Super easy, can do it by hand instead of getting the sewing machine out and kids LOVE them. Google it for free patterns or there's the book sock and glove (http://craftschmaft.wordpress.com/2007/12/27/oooh-i-cant-wait/)

Anyway, that's probably enough of my rambling on your blog :)
Good luck with it!
